Lower Taxes & Grow Iowa’s Economy
A strong economy starts by letting Iowans keep more of what they earn. Iowa has become one of the most fiscally responsible states in the nation by reducing taxes, controlling spending, and creating an environment where families and businesses can thrive.
Rep. Gehlbach has supported historic tax relief that reduced Iowa’s individual income tax to a flat 3.8% and backed additional property tax reforms to provide long-term relief for homeowners, farmers, and businesses. He believes responsible budgeting and conservative fiscal management allow Iowa to continue returning excess revenue to taxpayers while investing in the state’s priorities.
Dan remains committed to growing Iowa’s economy, attracting new employers, supporting small businesses, and making Iowa the best place in America to live, work, raise a family, and start a business.
Making Iowa’s Schools the Best in America
As Chair of the House Education Appropriations Subcommittee, Rep. Gehlbach has been at the center of many of Iowa’s most significant education reforms.
Dan helped deliver historic Education Savings Accounts that empower parents with more educational choices, passed major charter school reforms that expand opportunities for students, increased beginning teacher pay to among the highest in the nation, invested record levels of state funding in K-12 education, and supported higher wages for paraprofessionals.
He also led efforts to strengthen mathematics education through the Math Counts Act, expand gifted and talented opportunities, improve advanced math pathways, and ensure every Iowa student has access to a high-quality education that prepares them for success.
Dan believes education should focus on academic excellence, parental involvement, local control, and giving every child the opportunity to reach his or her full potential.
Safe Communities & Strong Iowa Values
Keeping Iowa families safe remains one of government’s most important responsibilities.
Rep. Gehlbach has supported legislation that provides law enforcement with additional tools and resources to combat illegal immigration, human trafficking, drug trafficking, and violent crime. He has also supported measures to strengthen election integrity, protect private property rights, and prevent foreign adversaries from purchasing Iowa farmland.
Dan believes Iowa should continue protecting children, defending constitutional freedoms, supporting law enforcement, and preserving the values that have made Iowa one of the safest and best states in the nation to raise a family.
About Dan
Dan Gehlbach is a lifelong Iowan, native of Urbandale, and graduate of Urbandale High School. He returned home to Iowa in 2006 with a vision of building a business, raising a family, and giving back to the community that shaped him. Today, Dan proudly serves the people of Iowa House District 46 in the Iowa House of Representatives.
As Chair of the House Education Appropriations Subcommittee, Dan has become a leading voice on education policy and responsible budgeting. He has helped lead efforts to expand educational freedom through Education Savings Accounts, strengthen Iowa’s public charter schools, improve math achievement and gifted education opportunities, increase teacher pay, and ensure record investments in K-12 education while maintaining Iowa’s strong fiscal foundation. Dan believes parents—not government bureaucracies—should be empowered to make the best educational decisions for their children.
Dan also serves on the House Appropriations, Education, Health & Human Services, and Economic Growth & Technology Committees, where he works to keep Iowa one of the nation’s best places to live, work, start a business, and raise a family. He is committed to protecting individual liberties, lowering taxes, promoting economic growth, and ensuring state government lives within its means.
Before entering public service, Dan and his wife, Staci, built Mathnasium of West Des Moines into one of the Midwest’s premier math learning centers. Over 15 years, they helped thousands of students build confidence and succeed in mathematics while creating local jobs and serving families throughout Central Iowa. In 2026, after successfully growing the business, they sold Mathnasium to pursue new opportunities while continuing their commitment to education and public service.
Dan’s passion for education extends well beyond the legislature. He previously served as Vice President of the Waukee Community School District Board of Directors and has served on numerous community organizations, including the Waukee Area Chamber of Commerce, the Waukee Schools Foundation, and the national Mathnasium Franchise Advisory Committee. His leadership has always centered on strengthening schools, supporting families, and investing in the next generation.
Dan earned a Master of Business Administration from Arizona State University and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Kansas. Before becoming a small business owner, he worked as a Certified Internal Auditor in the healthcare and insurance industries. Earlier in his career, he spent two years teaching high school English in Japan, an experience that broadened his perspective and reinforced the life-changing impact of education.
Dan and Staci have been married for more than 20 years and are proud parents of two daughters. Their oldest daughter is a freshman at South Dakota State University, and their youngest daughter is a sophomore at Des Moines Christian School. The Gehlbach family attends Eternity Church in Clive, where they are active members of their church community.
Dan remains committed to serving the people of House District 46 with integrity, common sense, and a focus on results. Whether fighting for stronger schools, a growing economy, lower taxes, or greater individual freedom, he believes Iowa’s best days are still ahead.
